"The World of the Ancient Maya" by John S. Henderson
book review by Riley Burnham 8/14/2023
right on(!)
a book about ancient Mayan civilization [modern Guatemala/Mexico/etc.] -- Mezo/Central America
we hear about sprawling civilizations w/ agriculture, astronomy, folklore & religions, temples & calendars, sports & arenas, pyramids, rulers, hieroglyphs... wow(!!)
we learn about diverse languages & crossover w/ nearby cultures [Aztec, etc.]; & the question of mother-culture vs offshoots
pretty impressive work(!!)
was very happy to hear they were flat-Earthers [duh, it's true] & had constructed solar-interactive objects [illuminating specific objects on predictable dates, etc.]
one can still visit ruins, including the playing courts for ball-games [stone hoops attached to walls in court corridor] -- very decorative
