"The Salt Path" by Raynor Winn
book review by Riley Burnham 2/10/2023
goooood [audio]book(!!)
a bittersweet tale of loss, togetherness, adventure...
the book starts right as Raynor's husband is diagnosed w/ a terminal degenerative disease [CBD] AND they lose their house/business/farm; which renders them homeless, poor, & on short rope... they choose to walk from Somerset to Land's End [~650 mile coastal journey] to figure out what's next
the story is of aging lovers, long-married w/ college-aged children; walking together across cold, windswept, sometimes wild terrain; meeting plenty of excellent folks; & sharing their inner journey w/ the reader
Moth, her husband, is a trooper throughout, & has some delightful moments w/ Beowulf, the book they've brought
we find them counting coins, facing their reckoning of circumstances, enjoying simplicity, cooking & sleeping outdoors, being dirty & judged, & ultimately inspiring the folks they meet
the analogy of the salted blackberries was heartwarming
i chose to finish the book before determine if Moth made it, & i'll leave that as mysterious here & just say how glad i am to have read the tale
