"The Little Book of Hygge" by Meik Wiking
book review by Riley Burnham 12/19/2022
solid stuff -- very Danish, hehehe
this book is about a word -- a notion: hygge
this means comfort, hominess, coziness, pleasance... the glow of a fireplace; "golden hour" for photography; a warm cup of coffee...
blankets & pillows; friends & positive social engagements... embracing one's best
he asserts, essentially, that hygge is more or less central to the famous Danish happiness quotient [oft considered the "happiest people in the world"], & this is despite their atrocious [gray & wet, cold] weather, which forces them inside for much of the year
lighting, he explains, is essential to getting hygge just right: a room w/ too much or wrong light will make Danes fidgety & less comfortable -- like an examination
so he suggests fireplaces, books, coffee & fiends, blankets & coziness; putting phones away; keeping politics "for another day" in conversation; promoting egalitarian gift-giving [the sweet-spot]; etc.
extremely good, short book actually -- read by the author too
