"The Doctrine of Repentance" by Thomas Watson
book review by Riley Burnham 12/5/2022
great book; short & sweet
learned at the end this was originally written in the 1660s; i listened to the excellent audiobook version [2015]
basically, this is an up-&-down exploration of repentance, as a practice, goal, & potential salve(ation)
it explores ideas like a hardened heart being sorta useless; & a softened, repented heart [ongoing] being moldable & shapeable [useful]
it conjectures sin to be going away from God, & therefore living w/o grace & the good fortune
one of my favorite notions was that Satan, being the accuser, can find little to accuse when the repentant has already declared his sins before God [right on]
tears being medicinal; our paths being trials
thoroughly enjoyed
