"South" by Ernest Shackleton
book review by Riley Burnham 4/8/2024
well.......
i went through this entire [audio]book, dozing a few times & rewinding...
knowing the earth is flat, etc., & that Antarctica is... different than the common notion [i sincerely think], i went into this w/ a huge amount of skepticism
the basic story is that Shackleton & his men are stranded in the way south, surviving on breaking ice w/ their draining provisions & what they can resource
the narrative is lucidly told by Shackleton, who includes datapoints throughout & a captain's-reading-style play-by-play
it's pretty good, actually, although i doubt its overall premise, & think it's probably a political distraction or something-or-other [this comes out around WW1]
it's all about that blubber
a certainty is that it's treacherous & cold way out there
