"Moneyball" by Michael Lewis
book review by Riley Burnham 9/14/2022
solid [audio]book
basically the story of Billy Beane & his career from extraordinarily hopeful player into paradigm-challenging General Manager; scouting revolutionary; & someone who completely flipped the sport on its head
this gives details on protocols for choosing players [on-base % & strong hitting preferred] & which stats can be overlooked [many aspects of defense] -- basically throwing clever data-parsing into a real game; keeping the franchise on the lower end of spending/costs & maximizing player growth/star creation
i appreciate the notion that players felt as if batting became a team experience rather than the solitary one of normal [Beane's specific rules on batting/bunting/walking/etc.]
for fans this is practically a must-read; for academics it's a solid account of some inside baseball
