"Miles from Nowhere" by Barbara Savage
book review by Riley Burnham 12/27/2022
i liked this one
written in the early 80s, this details/chronicles the Savages' international bicycle journey to something like 20+ countries over 2 years (wow!)
told w/ a friendly warmth & apparent honesty, Barbara gives us a keen view into the travails & joys of mounting 2 bikes in California & setting off toward Canada; hopping the ocean to places like Egypt, India, Thailand, New Zealand, & so on...
it's a really neat way to see the planet; meeting folks along the way & getting smacked by culture-shock
there are some [quite a few, actually] near-death encounters via bike accidents/automobile collisions, near drowning, sickness, etc.
ultimately, they persevere & complete their journey w/ an epic tale to tell
a part that stands out, i think in India, is when both are hit by a truck w/ Larry, her husband, JUST missing getting his head run over [feels the tread]
glad i read it [audiobook 👍]
i suppose i should include that while research this, i learned Barbara was killed via a bicycle accident while waiting for the book to be published... my goodness
life's precious y'all
