"Mere Christianity" by C. S. Lewis
book review by Riley Burnham 12/7/2022
really good stuff
surprisingly in-depth & lucid, this is a mature & wise examination of Christianity
taking a logical perspective, it proposes the sort of "options A B or C" when considering truth [either __ or __; possibly __], & touches on differences in beliefs of Christians vs other systems -- namely that Christians are vying for their eternal soul [compared to a hedonist or short-term gain]; & describes some deeper differences
it's as if Lewis pondered the myriad of options, & wrote this book saying, "look, there's other systems out there -- this one just seems correct, & it's fruits bare the types of fruits that i'd like to produce -- namely charity, forgiveness, love..."
he has an air of "well IF God is real, then..." which is honestly refreshing -- he seems sincere in his come-to belief that Jesus must have been God in flesh/as man; then discusses the ups & downs of how this could possibly work
temperance, for instance, he outlines as being originally an 'enough' mindset, rather than total abstinence [comparing to Muhammadism/Islam, which forbids alcohol, etc.] -- he says God made materials & food & wants us to use them, just w/ temperance/control
seems fair
