"Making Toast" by Roger Rosenblatt
book review by Riley Burnham 12/6/2023
holy cow this was good(!!!)
emphatically, this is one of the best, saddest, most touching books i've read...
the word 'poignant' comes to mind, & is actually appropriate here -- this one strikes, or pricks at the soul... deeply sorrowful
Roger's 30-something daughter dies suddenly [heart attack], leaving her 3 young children & husband... Roger & his wife move in w/ the fam
we get Grandpa Roger [Boppo] interacting w/ kids, answering their questions, witnessing them, all the while the undertone of grief is pervasive -- this is a book about acceptance & healing, or plodding along...
i loved the portion about the Wailing Wall [Jerusalem] being kicked ["fuck you, God!"] by a close friend when he hears the news...
really, i so HIGHLY recommend this one
