good book(!)

a story of adventure, happenstance, friendship, community, tenacity...

we get a brief background on Dion; then he's standing at the starting line of a multi-day race across the Gobi desert [Mongolia/China], wherein during the countdown a small dog appears at his feet; quite interested

as the race begins, the dog runs w/ the author for something like 70 miles; thus starting their connection & enduring bond

the dog, named Gobi after the race/desert, becomes a celebrity when the news media picks up the story & fundraises for Dion to bring her to Scotland [his home]

Gobi goes missing during the transition, & a large-scale effort ensues to relocate her & reunite them [the worry is a stray dog in China... Dion elaborates the issues & true risks]

ultimately, she is found & they are again brought together; then they make it back home in the UK -- a happy family
