"About Alice" by Calvin Trillin
book review by Riley Burnham 12/8/2023
this was short(!!!) -- took 42 minutes to get through it
a book about Calvin's late wife, Alice, who i've gathered was the subject of much of his writing; thus garnering some attention/fame -- "About Alice" is a reflection on this woman, her character, her beauty...
a couple passages i did take away: in noting of what makes a young girl helpful, optimistic, jovial... is a letter her parents had written for her, saying something of, "if given the option of all God's children, we'd still have chosen you..." awww... which i think was an observance of a different girl than Alice; sort of anecdotal... something he witnessed
anywho, Alice does make it to her daughter's wedding, beaming at her lucky life as she recovers afterward [was going through risky surgeries concurrently]
all in all, it's a testament to a man's affection for his partner, & puts a nice bow on a life well lived... one of kindness; of generosity...
