"A Runner's High" by Dean Karnazes
book review by Riley Burnham 8/29/2023
oooooh so good(!)
h-h-h-highly recommend this one
an ultramarathoner -- er, Ultramarathon Man -- giving us an inside scoop at his perspective
the book starts w/ Dean in the dirt, shocked, thrown, discombobulated...
then the story harkens back -- we get his family -- mother & father -- wife, son, daughter...
we meet some of Dean's friends; his co-athletes, which he praises the bond of
we get some awesome psychology of attrition, w/ his pushing on & tough, stern plodding
a particular charm in this story is a narrative device wherein a "what if" scenario unfolds: Dean's son asks him a question, & in his fatigue, he imagines a scenario of meaningful letdown & devastation -- me the reader reeling; then we snap back to reality w/ the question being presented, & the answer is then of course VERY clear: KEEP GOING
i loved this one, & look forward to reading "Ultramarathon Man" -- MAYBE even aspiring to run again 😁
